To Love What You Do

To Love What You Do
According to Warren Buffett: “In the management of our lives, the rule is: Love what you do. In the management of our businesses, the rule is: Hire people who love what they do.”

You don’t need a psychology degree to know when a manager or an employee love what they are doing. You can see it in their attitude, the way they communicate, how they backup an offer, when they talk about their workplace or about the company they are representing.

Many live by the idea that ‘it’s just a job’. Some place where they go to every day hoping the time will fly quickly, where they do only what they’re told (or what is written in the job description), waiting for the payday. They have no other motivation whatsoever. No goals, no perspectives. Everything seems linear and, in time, becomes frustrating.

On the other hand, there are professionals who win you over instantly: enthusiastic, full of energy. They gesticulate; they move, smile, provide or are look for solutions. They do not say ‘it can’t be done’ and fight for every client, to make him happy and to provide the services or products he wants. These are the ones who come up with ideas, get involved in the company’s activities and are proud of what they do. Plus, they are aware that, if the company is going well, they will also do well. In a nutshell: they love what they do and thus, are the perfect employees.

I am lucky. I love what I do, both in my everyday life and in business. And I have always wanted to have on my team people who love what they do, just like me. Indeed, motivation from the management is important for the growth of every employee, but it is up to each of them to use this motivation to their advantage. Because I know from my personal experience that, sometimes, no matter what you do for an employee – from financial stimulation to trainings – he never enjoys what he does. I think it depends on his mentality, on what he wants to do and to achieve in life.

I like to work with people who get involved, who want to learn more about what happens in the company, who are not saying, nor thinking ‘ I’m interested only in my cubicle, I don’t care about the rest’ and who come up with ideas and are not afraid to share them with the management. I have noticed that, in every company I have worked with, this kind of attitude has reflected in results – at employee as well as at the company’s level as well.

That is why I recommend every manager to have on board of their team professionals who want personal success, who are aiming to achieve individually and are loving their day to day routine and not the ones who only want a paycheck at the end of the every month. And I also speak from experience when I advise potential employees to look for those jobs that they would like to do every day, which motivate and stimulate them to use their abilities and skills to the fullest. This is what generates a win-win situation.
